Cider Time

On Saturday, I visited a cider mill in beautiful Mystic CT . It was very interesting to learn how they made cider. This particular mill operated in an old-fashioned way and was powered by steam.
The apples were all piled in the back of a truck and were dumped into a chute which went through this little building. I assume that in this building was machinery that pulverized the apples.

Pulverized apples came through this tunnel inside of the mill. The workers spread them out on the cheese cloth like material with wooden paddles. The material was folded up around the apples into a large square and the whole thing was then placed into the press

The press squeezed the juices out and they poured down into the vat beneath the press.
